SeaJourney Arken Freeth and the Adventure of the Neanderthals Book 1 edition by Alex Paul Children eBooks
SeaJourney is the first in a series of upper middle grade novels that center around Arken Freeth, a young officer in training in the Lanth Empire. It serves as an really interesting alternate history of the time before the fabled Great Flood, and how live thrived until the cataclysm that caused it.SeaJourney falls along the same lines as Percy Jackson, in it’s overall feel. It has that age blur that makes it both good for preteens and teenagers, and lots of new concepts to learn. The world in which SeaJourney takes place is a world before the massive flood mentioned in several religions, where most of the earth was full engulfed leaving very few safe places. As a result we get to see sabertooth tigers, mammoths, as well as neanderthals living along side the humans. I admit I wasn’t entirely sure how the neanderthal angle would pan out, but I think the book really made something unique by choosing to include them as well as the role that play in the humans lives.
I really like Arken. He’s the underdog in the Academy. He’s a commoner among royals and really small, which makes him an easy target for bullies…but he doesn’t back down and keeps working towards what he wants in life. It was nice to see him grow a bit as a person and gain true friends that were not ashamed of his low status, as well as stand out among the officer cadets as someone reliable. We do have a few chapters from other points of view, namely Yolantha and Ord. The first is a king of the enemy Tookans, who is in persute of a priceless treasure., and the other is a young Nander who is going through his own tough times with his tribe. The Nader chapters were a bit odd at first because of their simple ways of communication and the adjustment of different words being used for the same things, I came to enjoy them rather quickly.
Overall it’s a really fun book, which tons of new ideas. It’s definitely great for those who enjoy this age range, but don’t necessarily want another demi-god based story.

SeaJourney Arken Freeth and the Adventure of the Neanderthals Book 1 edition by Alex Paul Children eBooks Reviews
I am an adult and I got caught up in the adventure of Arken's sea journey. I like good underdog and outsider stories. Especially when there's pirates, killer beasts and monster sharks. Beautiful princesses and princes are frosting on the cake. If gore and dying bother you skip it. The ending is a cliffhanger.
A delightful store about old earth before the flood. Young Arken must prove that he is worthy to be a warrior and officer in training and at the same time find friends which he never really had before.
While the book ends in a cliff hanger it is still an excellent stand alone book. My only complaint was that there were a few areas which seemed to be repeated and there were a few contradictions.
While I don't pretend to know the middle grade reading tastes, I certainly think this story fit its target audience. Mr. Paul has built quite an imaginative world with his words. Arken seems an unlikely hero, the type, I think, that draws readers in. The chapters pack in both action and emotions. Like "The Clan of the Cave Bear," this story challenges the readers to immerse themselves in a past existence that might have been. Kudos to the author!
As an Author myself, you're always a little jealous when you come across a great read with wonderful world building. Mr. Paul has written a fantastic series that I immediately fell in love with and read through in a week. From the moment you meet the underdog, Arken Freeth, you are rooting for him. As the series unfolds, and you become familiar with the storytelling and world that existed before the time of the great flood, you will find yourself enraptured. I found it a fantastic rendering of a Robinsonade and heroic fantasy that will capture young and old alike. I look forward to the final installment! Well done, Sir!
What’s more fun than Neanderthals? How about Neanderthals on the high seas? Now that we have your attention...
Author Alex Paul delivers a highly imaginative, middle-grade epic fantasy adventure-packed story with everything you could ever ask for to have a rip-roaring good time.
SeaJourney (Book One) opens with an ancient archive stating that the Arken Freeth, lived 11,000 years prior, before the great flood. It follows that Arken’s world is inhabited by saber-toothed tigers and other monstrous beasts—and populated by both humans and Neanderthals.
It’s Arken’s fourteenth birthday and he's looking forward to graduating from school and going on a sea journey with his classmates. All he needs to do is balance a huge rock on a small point. That sounds easy enough, right? Well, he fails.
The only way he can redeem himself is to combat Gart, a very large, bully of a boy who happens to hate him. Arken wins the skirmish—and more of Gart’s wrath in the process. However, both boys will board the Sea Nymph with their classmates to serve their country, Lanth. It turns out that the people of Tolaria (allies of the Lanths) are under attack. Yolanta, King of Tookan, is even now traveling with pirates to hunt down Tolarian Princess Sharmane and steal her magic necklace. The Sea Nymph is readying for war.
Arken meets a girl named Talya, a freckle-faced scout-in-training, who warns Arken that Gart plans to kill him. And when word reaches the Sea Nymph that Princess Sharmane’s vessel has been attacked, Arken, who has proved his worth leads the charge against the enemy ship. Somewhere in the middle of all that is happening aboard the Sea Nymph, there's a Neanderthal who is gearing up to join in the fun.
With three other Arken Freeth volumes in production, SeaJourney introduces readers to a worthy hero and reveals some of his secrets and hidden powers. The book is well suited for tweens who identify with the underdog who overcomes hardships and ultimately triumphs. Too, our heroine is not based on her looks so much as her energetic attitude.
With fast-escalating action on every page, a likable, capable hero, plenty of mystery and an abrupt ending, readers will be lining up for more. Arken Freeth and the Adventure of the Neanderthals, SeaJourney #1 is sure to please those who crave fantastical adventures with pirates, underdogs, prehistoric beasts, and Neanderthals!
